ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: NORTH ALUMNI DESIREE WROTEN MAKES AN IMPACT BY SERVING AS DISTRICT DIRECTOR IN THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
October 4, 2022
From Riverside to Capitol Hill, former RUSD student Desiree Wroten is making an impact in her community by serving as the district director for the 41st Congressional District.
Wroten attended all RUSD schools, starting at Castleview elementary and graduating from J.W. North High School in 2003. She credits her counselor for guiding her into completing her A-G requirements, which allowed her to attend Cal State Long Beach directly out of high school to major in communications. Wroten recalls that her passion for history sparked while at North High School and has since been fascinated.
After college, while working in an office that managed various parking garages in Riverside, Wroten saw many influential city members coming in and out of the downtown district. Still unsure of what direction to pursue a career, the exposure to these professionals inspired Wroten to look into government and eventually led her to attend Cal Baptist University in 2013 and attain a master's degree in public administration.
Wroten accepted an unpaid internship position in 2014 with the office of Congressman Mark Takano to gain experience in public affairs while working on her master’s degree.
Wroten was granted a full-time staff opportunity only two weeks after accepting the internship position, leading her to an executive assistant position in Washington, D.C after completing her master’s program in 2015. She has since served as director of Operations and most recently, has returned to Riverside as the district director for the Congressman and the House of Representatives. In this role, she is responsible for managing a team of five staff, assisting constituents, coordinating the Congressman's local calendar and briefs, among a variety of daily responsibilities.
"Follow your passion, even if that passion initially appears as an unpaid opportunity," said Wroten. "Consistency and dedication will always make you stand out in the end."
